Santigold - “Big Mouth”
Back from blogging hiatus just long enough to post this, probs the best record I’ve heard in months. Even if it is apparently just a Buraka Som Sistema song just not in Portugese.

1) Kyle and John have loud voices. 2) Kyle and John like music. 3) Kyle and John like having friends. 4) Kyle and John decided to yell about music on the internet instead of in real life so that 3) remains true in practice.

Obligatory DJ Earworm 2011 Year-end mashup post. Like his past efforts, he makes a collection of (mostly) pop garbage sound like a completely new piece of music - it’s a pretty good effort.

Sharon Van Etten’s third studio album is due out early in 2012, and a single like this leading it off generates a lot of interest for me. Produced by a member of The National and featuring guest spots by that band, Wye Oak and the Walkmen this album certainly has its indie rock pedigree sewn up tightly. Plus, it’s a perfectly suitable lazy day rocker that flows from beginning to end without missing a beat.

Yeah, this will do nicely. EP by these guys is available now with a full-length coming soon. Not sure how I missed them when they started making the rounds a few months ago, but I’m glad I’ve heard their retro rootsy jam band sound now. Great song, and what a VOICE that lady has.

And now a taste of something new. I don’t know much about Meg Myers, other than she has a pretty entertaining normal tumblr (i.e. cute pictures of cute girls doing cute things. Also music.). This song has some of that 90s revival vibe I love so much, with a little bit of the power lead females of the late 2000s thrown in for strong effect. Plus, it’s produced by Dr. Rosen Rosen, one of my favorite remix artists. Worth a listen, indeed!

Lana Del Rey continues her absolute take over of the internet with the leak of this song - a track from her upcoming album. If it escapes with even 10% of it’s hype intact, it’s going to be one hell of a release.

The Arcade Fire have just released a video for my absolute favorite track from their stunning 2010 album The Suburbs. It’s fun to watch the weirdness unfold and it fits the track brilliantly. Check it out!

You might recall that VH1 does occasionally participate in “music,” often in the form of an evening spent with what they term as “Divas.” Usually this night of wailing is accompanied by Mariah trying to break a vocal chord and Aretha looking cantankerous, but this year we got a little something extra - Florence (of Florence + The Machine) and the Dap-Kings doing a tribute to Amy Winehouse. Flo may not be a diva (at least, not exactly) and may not be the first name you think of when you want a soul cover, but she certainly knows how to work a microphone and my ears love her for it.

From “Born to Die” to “Born to Lose” to…Born in the USA? Well, sort of.
The Gaslight Anthem make no effort to hide how much they love Bruce Springsteen, and why should they? They come from the same New Jersey background and make the same sort of garage tinged Americana rock. How lucky for them, then, that at their “homecoming” concert in Asbury Park, NJ The Boss himself decides to jump on stage and jam with them. Check it out!

So Sleigh Bells are back with the first single from their new album, Reign of Terror. This band lays it all out, man - what you hear here is exactly what you get when you see them live…only the live is 10x louder and there is some sort of laser light show going on.
This seems to pick up right where they left off…not a bad thing, for fans of Treats.

Though it does feel a little weird to see Lana Del Ray in an actual directed video, I’m more than happy to share her first “official” single from her upcoming album…both because she is a damned fine looking lady AND because the song (and all the songs we’ve heard from her) sound like something vintage and secret. Hopefully she manages to maintain some of that with the entire internet following her every move.

Not dead. New music from The Big Pink. I dare you to not try and do the lip thing at 2:05.

Cults feat. Freddie Gibbs - “Bad Things (remix)”
Freddie Gibbs sounds kinda sad, man. Dude could use a hug.

Yasmin feat. Ms. Dynamite - “Light Up (The World) (MJ Cole remix)”
The original is on some “Where Were U In 92” type shit, and garage vet MJ Cole brings it forward a couple years, bringing the super massive dramatic strings that made peak-Garage so great (see also). Drum patterns are more grime-y, but who cares. Still think Garage should have come back bigger, but you take what you can.

Kid Sister feat. Danny Brown - “Gucci Rag Top (remix)”
Man, how much am I loving the Danny Brown’s awkward swag? Hella much, is how.
